SPECIAL EVENTS AT CONFERENCE
The following are special ticketed events at the ARA Literacy Conference. There are three choices of Thursday Literacy Luncheons that are offered for various levels. A Book and Author Breakfast is offered on Friday. Click here for more conference information.
Linda Dorn is a Professor of Literacy Education at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and is Director of the UALR Center for Literacy. Her luncheon session is Engaging Children in Making Meaning. This session will look at ways children build connections and make meaning as they read and discuss complex texts. Level: All
Matthew Gollub is an award-winning children’s author who will present a fun and upbeat luncheon session—Teach Reading Like a Jazz Musician! This award-winning children’s author combines dynamic storytelling, interactive drumming, and valuable reading and writing tips for the primary classroom! Level: Primary/ Intermediate
Lydia Stack is an international English Language Teacher Educator. She is a founding member of Stanford University’s Understanding Language Initiative addressing CCSS for ELL students and is a consultant for several companies. Her luncheon is Academic Conversations with English Learners. Level: Middle/Secondary
Start your day on Friday morning with award-winning author Andrea Pinkney! She will present Book Magic: Revealing the Beauty and Power of Reading.
Jumpstart's Read for the Record
Each year, Jumpstart selects one children’s book as the catalyst for Read for the Record. This year’s campaign book, Not Norman: A Goldfish Story, written by Kelly Bennett and illustrated by Noah Z. Jones, is a humorous tale about a child who finds a new friend in an unexpected place. With vivid illustrations and expressive language, the story is sure to engage children and adults of all ages. Help us break the world reading record (again!) for the most people reading the same book on the same day.

LOCAL COUNCILS - MAKING A DIFFERENCE
The Ozark Reading Council took books to the Boy's Baptist Ranch where they book talked 42 books. Every boy chose a book and the additional books were added to their library.
White River Reading Council partnered with the Ozark Literacy Foothills to put on a children's reading camp to help them raise money to help fund their program that helps illiterate individuals become literate. Through this camp, they helped them raise $3,000. Members hosted the read alouds and writing sessions for the children, so not only were they raising money to promote literacy, they were also helping kids strengthen their literacy skills.
Arkadelphia Area- The council supplied books for incoming kindergarten students. This was done with a grant from a local organization.
Pinnacle Special Interest - At the Spring Awards Banquet, students "performed" Reader's Theater. Awards were given for "Eggsibition" where eggs were dressed up as a book character.
Last spring the SEARK Reading Council created and distributed age-specific care packages for children ages 0-5 and their caregivers. Packages were distributed to the children through the county health units of Bradley, Cleveland, Desha, Drew, and Lincoln counties for scheduled vaccinations.
Reading on the Ridge- Books for Babies was their literacy grant project. They purchased board books and gave them to our local hospital to give newborn babies.
Three Rivers Reading Council had 75 participants in their Young Writers Contest! (They noted that they had only five entries the previous year!)
Arkansas River Valley Reading Council- ARVRC supplied a book into the hands of each student entering kindergarten.
